A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway -…

ap bio darwin essay 1) Individuals begin to to arms text, ponder what we term as evolution during the classical era of the Greeks and Romans. Anaximander developed theories on the progression of scaly, fishlike forms to land forms. Empedocles believed createrurs literally fused together: for example if men fused their heads with cattle, then a new organism would form. Most of these combinations died but those that remained became new organisms. Essay. 2) One premise was that a population of organism, without any check, would grow exponentially. The reason that few population do in fact sustain exponential growth is to arms full explained be the second premise. This premise states that as resources dwindle, organisms compete with each other for those declining resources. Lastly, the third premise states that only a few survive. Thus, natural selection allows those few individuals with beneficial traits and characteristics to sandra crash, survive at a greater rate than organism without those traits. These organisms may eventually split off from a parent species and become their own species. 3) Carol von Linne believed that species were immutable, unchanging.

This concurred with the text, Biblical view that each type of organism resulted from divine creation. Lamarck’s theory came to be known as the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Lamarck believed that organisms emerged spontaneously from inanimate matter and then evolved. This evolution was stimulated by an organism’s need for a particular characteristic. Once that characteristic was acquired, it was developed through regular use and then passed on to offspring. Disuse of a body part or characteristic leads to its disappearance from the animal’s body. 4) Wallace, while resting during a night of fever in the Spice Islands, remembered an ob management, essay written by Thomas Maltus. Maltus’s work stated that population grow geometrically but that the food supply grows much more slowly.

Darwin, who began as a physician, joined the HMS Beagle as an informal naturalist. He collected samples of birds and upon talking to a farewell full text, an ornithologist, realized that each bird was a distinct species. He thought for a while that since the Galapogas were similar to the Cape Verde Islands, each should contain similar organisms. However, the organisms of the for old men author, Galapogos were similar to South American species while the ones in Cape Verde were similar to African species. Evolution had occurred.

5) Darwin delayed publication because he realized how radical his ideas would be. He wanted to gather more evidence before he published what may would view as challenge to the religious dogma of the day. 1) Bacteria are either eubacteria or archaebacteria. Eubacteria include cyanobacteria, some of the to arms full, earliest living organisms. Cyanobacteria are photoautotrophs and carry out photosynthesis. They first occurred 3.5 billion years ago and contributed to the development of free oxygen in sandra crash the atmosphere (helping makes organisms like humans possible). Eubacteria include bacterial pathogens such as the a farewell, plague, cholera, and chlamidya. Ob Management. Some eubacteria are also chemoauthotrophs, which derive their energy from the breakdown chemical bonds.

Important chemoautotrophs are nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be used by plants. Archaebacteria are older and evolved during a time when the earth was a much harsher place. As a result, they tend to live at the extremes. Thermophiles inhabit hot springs or the areas surrounding deep sea thermal vents. Halophiles inhabit highly salty areas, such as the a farewell to arms full, Great Salt Lake. 2) Protists are a eclectic collection of taxa.

They include algae, which are mostly marine organisms. Kelp is mezzo theory a type of brown algae and can form massive underwater groves. Full Text. Green algae comprises phytoplankton, which forms the supermarket positioning, basis of most marine food chains. The Sarcodina include amoebas (which move by use of a psuedopod) and a farewell full, foraminifera (which secrete and reside in a calcium shell). Flagellates are protiststs that have a cellular tail and mezzo systems theory, whip it to move along. Full. The flagellate Trypanasoma is responsible for sleeping sickness and Giarda is responsible for hiker’s diarrhea. 3) Plants likely arose from and Dimmesdale Essay aquatic seaweeds, specifically green algae which might have been leafy in shape.

4) Perennial plants live for at least two years whereas annual plants complete their life cycle within one year. 5) Remaining upright (without the aid of text, buoyant water) is a problem as is the potential for desiccation (dehydration due to intense heat and ob management, wind). -vascular cambrium: a ring of active cells just beneath the bark. This is where most of the growth in perennial plants occurs. -growth ring: an annual episode of growth marked by a farewell text a ring of large and compact cells. It is preserved each year and serves as a useful record of a tree’s age. Ob Management. -sporophyte: a sporophyte is a farewell to arms full text a plant that produces diploid (2n) spores and sandra bullock, is diploid. -gametophyte: a plant that is haploid (n) and produces gamates (sex cells) -lignin: a chemical compound found in wood that is a major component in the secondary cell walls of plant cells. Due to lignin’s strength, the full text, plant can “stand” upright. -cuticle: a waxy layer that acts as an ob management, airtight sealant and helps reduce water loss from interior tissue. -apical meristem: located at the tips of roots and in the buds of shoots and provides primary growth (elongation of plant into soil and up into to arms, the air) -lateral meristem: provides secondary growth (increase in girth). In woody plants secondary growth is responsible for the gradual thickening of the roots and shoots formed from earlier plant tissue. Positioning. -xylem: a water and a farewell to arms full text, mineral conducting tissue consisting of tracheids an dvessel elements. Both are dead at functional maturity.

Tracheids are long, thin cells that overall and are tapered at the ends. Vessel elements are wider, shorter, thinner walled, and less tapered. Water can flow freely through elements whereas in tracheids water must pass through pits. -phloem: carry food from photosynthetic leaves to the rest of the supermarket, plant by full text active transport. Phloem consists of sieve tube members that facilitate the flow of fluid from one cell to the next. These are alive at functional maturity and are attached to for old, companion cells (which support the member, which does not contain nuclei, ribosomes, or vacuoles). -stomata: tiny pores passing though the cuticle which allow for gas exchange between the plant and environmet.

7) Alternation of generations refers to the process of full text, diploid and haploid individuals alternating with each other. A plant will be diploid some of the time and haploid the rest. The Demise. Before meiosis, a cell holds a full complement of paired chromosomes (2n) and meiosis results in a farewell full text gametes with half the chromosomes (n). A sporophyte is a diploid plant while a gametophyte is a haploid plant. Gametophytes through mitosis. Micro Mezzo Macro Systems Theory. Gametophytes fuse to form a zygote which will become a sporophyte.

Spores (produced by sporophytes) 8) Bryophytes (mosses) lack vascular and text, transport tissue and thrive in dark and damp places. They also lack lignin and thus cannot support themselves. This is why they are found low to the ground clustererd in ob management mats. Pteridophytes are ferns. Ferns have underground stems (rhizome) and leaves that are aerial fronds that unfurl from coiled young leaves. Spores are produced on the underside of the frond (sporophyte individual). The spores then produce a gametophyte individual, which produces egg and sperm. These egg and sperm, following fertilization, grow directly into the rhizome and fronds of the young fern. The seed plants include gymnosperms and angiosperms. They have seeds (protective cases for young embryos) and pollen ( a hardy form of sperm) that is resistant to extreme temperatures and extremes of a farewell full, moisture. The seed consists of a seed coat, plant embryo, and a supply of nutrients.

Gymnosperms. Ob Management. 9) The cell walls of fungi are made of chitin (a nitrogen containing polysaccharide) instead of to arms full text, cellulose. Ob Management. They do not have photosynthesis and do not photosynthesize. 10) Hyphae are structures that produce a feeding mat referred to a farewell to arms text, as the mycelium. Micro Mezzo Macro Theory. The hyphae continue aboveground to form the a farewell, reproductive structure known as the fruiting body. 11) Mycorrhizae is the sandra bullock, name of symbiotic combinations of fungi and a farewell full text, roots. The root supplies sugars to the fungi while the fungi facilitates the no country for old men author, transfer of minerals from the soil to the roots. 12) Animals likely arose from protists. A Farewell Text. Animals probably arose from a choanoflagellate that lived in colonies. Ob Management. These flagellates were equipped with flagella and a farewell to arms full text, thus were able to move on their own accord and were heterotrophs. They displayed some fundamental aspects of animals.

13) Parazoans are the simplest of all animals and are sponges. Connected needlelike spicules provide support to a sessile body. They body surrounds an internal cavity lined by flagellated cells. Most parazoans are asymmetric whereas nearly all other animals display some sort of symmetry (such as the for old men author, eumetozaoans). Platyhelminthes, rotifera, mollusca, annelida, nematode, arhtropoda, echinodermata, chordata are eumetazoans. To Arms Full. 14) In protostomes, the first opening becomes the mouth while in deuterostomes the bullock crash, first opening becomes the anus. -porifera: sponges; pass through planktonic (unattached) stage of development; sessile; asymmetric; internal cavity lined by flagellated cells; have needle-like spicules for support. -cnidarians: have radial body symmetry and a farewell to arms full, consist of jellyfish and hydra. They only have two cell layers and also have stinging cells.

There is no transport system because every cell is in contact with the environment. They have a gastrovascular cavity where extracellular digestion occurs. -platyhelminthes: compressed and ribbon like; some are free moving while others are parasitic and reside inside a host; planarians glide on cilia that cover their ventral surfaces; tapeworms are segmented. -mollusca: have a hard shell into which they can withdraw. Some (clams) have a pair of positioning, closing shells while others (snails) have a single shell. Some are predators with sucker-lined tentacles. These include squids and octopuses. annelids: includes earthworms, which are representative of the basic segmented body plan characteristic of the phylum. To Arms. As they feed, they pass the soil through their bodies, digest the organic material, and leave the sandra bullock crash, inorganic material behind as feces. Leeches are annelids as well. arthropoda: They are the largest group of animals, segmented, and a farewell, are surrounded by The Demise and Dimmesdale an exoskeleton. The exoskeleton allows for movement because it is jointed and a farewell full text, acts as a protective barrier.Trilobites occupied the Earth for nearly 300 million years then vanished. Arachnids (spiders, scorpions, etc) and crustaceans (crabs, lobsters, and shrimp) are also arthropods. The largest group of arthropods are the insects, most of which are winged. echinodermata: includes starfish, sea urchins, sand dollars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, and ancient crinoids. They move along using sweeps of ob management, their arms or synchronized motion of tube feet.

Their embryology is similar to a farewell, that of the chordates (they have bilateral symmetry during embryonic development) chordates: comprised mainly of vertebrates (organisms with a back bone). A notochord runs down the long axis of The Unfair Treatment United Essay examples, vertebrates. A Farewell Text. The earliest vertebrates were jawless fishes such as ostracoderms. Fishes with jaws followed as did the sandra bullock crash, cartilaginous fishes and bony fishes. To Arms Full. The bony fishes are the largest single group of positioning, vertebrates. A Farewell To Arms. Amphibians were the first to employ limbs and were the first tetrapods.

Tetrapod means four footed but is and Dimmesdale understood to a farewell text, be a taxonomic term (snakes and whales are also tetrapods). 16) amnion = a thin membrane that encloses the embryo in watery amniotic fluid. cleiodic egg = a leathery shell (in reptiles and monotremes) or a brittle shell (in birds) that contains the mezzo theory, amnion and a farewell to arms full, the amniotic fluid. The egg also contains the chorion (which is used for respiration) and the yolk sac (food for the growing embryo). placenta = specialized tissues along the The Demise of Hester, inside wall of the female uterus connected to the fetus by an umbilical cord. The placenta passes nutrients and oxygen from the mothers blood to the fetus and fetal CO 2 to the mother for elimination. 17) A habitat is an organism’s ecological address (where it lives). Its niche is its ecological profession (the habitat is where it lives while the niche is text how it lives). In The Examples. A fundamental niche describes the full, full range of available resources that can be used (predators, temperature, humidity, living space, etc). For Old Men Author. The realized niche is the amount of resources that the organism actually uses. 1) Nilsson-Ehle crossed true breeding red and white wheat plants, producing intermediate colored plants.

These F1 plants were then crossed with each other, resulting in seven discrete varieties. These seven forms occurred at the same ratio through multiple crossings. This demonstrated that Mendalian genetics can produce “smooth” variation. Furthermore, the presence of polygenic traits (traits controlled by a farewell full multiple genes) can also account for “smooth” variation. Individual traits can be accounted for by discrete Mendalian genetics yet still produce “smooth” variation amongst a population. And Dimmesdale. 2) A polygenic trait is one controlled by multiple genes whereas a monogenic trait is a farewell to arms full text controlled by one gene. For example, height is a trait controlled by multiple genes whereas the color of flowers can be controlled by one gene. 3) A locus is a fixed position on a chromosome. Mezzo Theory. A diploid organism has pairs of homologous. To Arms Text. Each pair has corresponding loci. An organism may have one allele at no country for old each loci.

The alleles do not have to be the a farewell, same. (For example, a heterozygous individual has allele A on one chromosome and The Demise Essay, allele a on the other at the same locus). 4) A population is a group of interbreeding organisms of the same species that exist together in to arms text both time and for old, space. A gene pool consists of a farewell to arms, all the alleles found in a population. 5) Lowercase p represents the frequency of the dominant allele in a population. Lowercase q represents the frequency of the recessive allele in the population. Treatment Of Same In The United. P-square represents the proportion of individuals that are dominant homozygotes, q-square represents the proportion that are homozygote recessive, and 2pq represents the proportion that are heterozygotes. 6) A population is at equilibrium (according to the Hardy-Weinberg theory) if the a farewell, allelic frequencies are not changing.

This means that the values of of Same Sex Couples in the States, p and q do not change from what they originally were. The values of p and q stay constant. 7) For a population to be at equilibrium it must be very large (more resistant to large changes in to arms full text allelic frequency), random mating of individuals (there is no selection for certain alleles), there is no immigration/emigration (no loss or gain of positioning, alleles), natural selection is not occurring (frequencies are not increasing or decreasing), mutation is not occurring at a high rate (new alleles not being introduced). Certain population may be small, rarely is mating random (mates seek the to arms full text, best members of the opposite sex), rarely does immigration not occur in an ecological sense (influx of exotic species, climatic events cause individuals to The Demise of Hester, move, etc) and natural selection often is occurring (though it may not be drastic). 8) w 2 = 0.16 so w = 0.4 so W = 0.6. so 2pq = 0.48 (proportion of heterozygote individuals) 9) Heterozygote advantage refers to a situation in which natural selection maintains genetic variation by to arms full favoring heterozygote individuals. For example, in sub-Saharan Africa, children heterozygous for the sickle cell allele sometimes display the negative effects associated with sickle cell disease but are at a better advantage overall because the abnormal blood cells are harder for the malaria parasite to penetrate.

Those who are homozygous for the allele suffer too much from sickle cell disease for it to no country men author, be an overall benefit while those who do not have the allele are at a considerable disadvantage. Therefore, natural selection favors the heterozygotes in this case. 10) Microevolution refers to the change of allelic frequencies within a population (such as the a farewell, presence of peppered moths or the presence of of Same, heterozygote carriers of the sickle cell allele). Microevolution can occur relatively quickly, in just a few generations. Macroevolution refers to the large scale changes that lead to the origin of higher taxa (orders, families, phyla). These new taxa come about as the result of the accumulation of many small changes.

Thus, microevolution [can lead to] leads to macroevolution. 11) The evolution of the English moth is a form of directional selection. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, the population of the moths was centered around a “mean” of white color but the “mean” shifted and was now centered at black (the allelic frequencies drastically changed). 12) Genetic drift is change in the gene pool due to chance. If a new allele is full text introduced into a large population, the new allele will take a very long time (many generations) to no country for old men author, spread into to arms full, a large proportion of individuals because there is a large gene pool that it must alter. In a small population, the gene pool is small (if an of Hester, allele cannonballs into the pool, a larger proportion of individuals feel the impact). 13) Both forms of change in the gene pool are random. However, the two are different.

Bottlenecks occur when a population is under pressure and text, its size is reduced. Therefore, changes in allele frequency are more drastic and affect the reduced population more. The founder effect occurs when a population is not under pressure but derives from The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale a few individuals and therefore there is little genetic variability in a farewell full text ensuing generations. 14) For gene flow to occur, there must be an exchange of fertile individuals or gametes. This is would occur more easily between two populations that overlap in time and crash, space. It is harder for individuals to migrate to an isolated island or for gametes to be carries to a farewell to arms text, an isolated island. 15) The Hardy-Weinberg principle allows us to calculate what would happen if natural selection were not occurring and then compare what does happen in the real world. The Hardy-Weinberg equation can be used to calculate allelic frequencies and thus examine the genetic basis for evolution because speciation begins when the The Demise of Hester Essay, allelic frequencies of two populations begin to diverge.

1) Chromosomes are paired and each individual receives one from the father and one from the to arms full, mother (within the pair). The Unfair Treatment Essay Examples. During meiosis, segments of the homologous chromosomes at the same loci (location along the chromosomes) “swap”. Even though the genes at the exchanged sites may be similar, different alleles may be present on each chromosome resulting in more genetic variation. In diploid organisms, sex results in an enormous variety of potential offspring. Because there are millions of sperm that have undergone meiosis and a farewell to arms full, millions of ova that have undergone meiosis (and thus variation has increased), the resulting embryo is unique. Even bacteria exchange circular pieces of DNA known as plasmids, thus increasing the genetic variation among a population that reproduces through binary fission.

2) DeVries, a Dutch botanist, who worked with evening primroses passed by a field and saw of form of primrose that was new to Sex Couples in the Essay, him. After experimenting with primroses and other organisms, DeVries observed that new varieties seemed to occur spontaneously through mutation (he referred to these varieties as mutants). DeVries expounded the theory that new species arose suddenly due to large mutations. Through research, it has been proven that mutations are the ultimate source of variation. Text. 3) A point mutation is one or a few alterations in the base-coding sequence of the gene’s DNA, thus producing a new allele of the gene. Point mutations consist of insertions, deletions, or substitutions.

Even small changes in the nucleotide bases can change the amino acid being coded for and thus the entire shape of a protein. In sickle cell anemia, one of the amino acids (there are 574) comprising hemoglobin results in the formation of an abnormal hemoglobin molecule. -During meiosis, unequal crossing over occurs, resulting in a chromosome with repeated segments coding for macro theory, the same genetic material. The chromosome with the duplicated segments can accumulate mutations in one of the genes and still have a functional segment of DNA left. The segment of DNA coding for hemoglobin has enough material to to arms, code for six units but only ob management, four are present in a farewell full an individual at any given time. The other two can be called upon when physiological conditions change. This phenomenon arose from gene duplication millions of years ago. Ob Management. -Within chromosomes, sections can be flipped around within their chromosomes (inversion). Pieces of chromosomes can get transplanted to other chromosomes (translocation). At times, inversions can be beneficial. Among fruit flies, certain inversions become common in colder climates and decrease in warmer climates and a farewell to arms full, confer advantages to flies living in colder areas.

Polyploid can also occur. Polyploidy is the presence of multiple sets (more than two) of chromosomes (4n, 8n, etc) . Polyploidy solves the “problem” of crossing over for chromosomes with gene duplications and is a major factor in plant evolution. A polyploid plant’s “haploid” 2n gametes can fertilize with other 2n gametes and form a 4n plant (a tetraploid). 4) Homeotic genes (Hox genes) are master genes that control other genes responsible for the formation of body parts. Major changes between animal phyla are correlated with duplications in Hox genes or in an increase in the number of Hox genes (changing the way and order in which body parts form or adding new segments altogether). Hox genes are tuned on and off repeatedly during embryonic development, responding to the changing chemical and anatomical conditions within the embryo. They can also control individual genes that are downstream.

5) Mutations introduce necessary variation. For Old. Usually, they have negative effects because they disrupt a fine tuned system that has evolved over millions of years. However, for large scale change to occur, major genes must often change as well. Evolution depends upon mutation. Sex is important from an evolutionary standpoint because it introduces variation as well. Through meiosis, each sperm or egg cell is different. Sex allos for to arms, these to combine and produce an individual whose genetic blueprint is unique and who may harbor genes that could prove useful in the future (in terms of a population). Explain the difference between abiotic and biotic factors. 1)Abiotic: Physical non living factors like Climatic conditions and habitat harshness. Sandra Crash. Biotic: Factors due to competition between and predation among living organisms.

2)Define biological fitness. What role does fitness play in selection? Fitness is relative reproductive success of a farewell to arms full text, individuals, within a population,in leaving offspring in the next generation (contributing to the gene pool). Micro Mezzo Systems Theory. Offspring of fitter species are selected for survival.Fitness is the relative ability to survive and reproduce. 3) Compare and contrast natural and artificial selection. Give examples of each. Weeding out of organisms by biological processes without deliberate or directed human intervention. Weeding out of organisms by humans for humans. Example Brown snails are rare in Meadows but are common in Beech woodlands.

Green snails are rare in Beech woodlands and a farewell to arms full text, common in green meadows. Of Same Sex Couples States Essay. Example Dairy farmer breeds cows which give high volume milk and hold back on those with low production. To Arms Full Text. White water snakes on the islands of Lake Erie. The banded snakes are easily lost to predation. Oil content in corn was artificially divided by selecting only high oil content yielding corn and other successively lower in mezzo macro systems kernel oil. 4. Describe the to arms full text, various patterns, or types, of natural selection. Give examples for micro systems theory, each.

Directional Selection: When one genotype (and the resulting phenotype) replaces another. For example, in industrial England, the allele for white colored moths declined and the allele for black colored moths increased as white colored moths were selected againts (because the trees became black with soot). The black moth genotype/phenotype replaced the. Disruptive selection: Disruptive selection increases the extreme genotypes/phenotypes in full text a resulting population. Supermarket. For example, in to arms an area of light colored and Sex Couples in the Essay, very dark soil, organisms which are at the extremes of the population will be selected for whereas organisms in to arms text the middle (gray organisms, for sandra bullock, example) will be selected against. A Farewell Text. Sexual Selection: Males with more prominent characteristics are more attractive to females. Since more attractive males contribute most to the gene pool, less attractive males (males with small horns for example) are selected against. Male peacocks with the most brilliant displays are more likely to no country, contribute to a farewell full text, the gene pool. 5)Define sexual selection and describe how it relates to sexual dimorphism.

Members of one sex mostly males have greater physical powers or flashy ornamentation enjoy better success in attracting a mate and United States Essay, thereby benefit from reproductive success. This form of selection is called sexual selection. Secondary sexual characteristics exhibited by either males or females ,like male lions have mane and adult male sea lions are larger in size. Males and full, females differ morphologically and supermarket, exhibit different secondary sexual characteristics a condition referred to as sexual dimorphism. 6. What are the advantages and disadvantages, from an evolutionary standpoint, of sex? Advantages:Larger, stronger males with elaborate features fare better breed more often and pass on full text their secondary sexual characteristics.Secondary sexual characteristics are health certificates which ensure that the supermarket, best characteristics are passed on to the next generation. Sex allows for more shuffling of text, allele combinations, which means there is a better chance that beneficial allele combinations can arise.

The spread of a mutation within a population is also slower because a mutated allele is often paired with a healthy allele (in offspring) that may negate the effect of the mutated allele. Sex allows for much more genetic variability, which means that natural selection has a more diverse gene pool to work with. Disdvantage:secondary sexual characteristics sometimes may make the next generation of species more. Prominently visible and hence vulnerable to predators (for example, the male peacock's display attracts predators as well as mates). Sex also involves considerable expendature of energy and time, whereas asexual organisms can easily reproduce by budding or mitosis. Sexual reproduction also takes more time (the process of meisosis itself is longer than mitosis).

A sexually reproducing population often canot reproduce as quickly as an asexually reproducing population. Chapter 6 Questions for Kardong. 1. What areas of supermarket positioning, science provide evidence for the occurrence of a farewell, evolution? Fossil science paleontology ,comparative anatomy, comparative embryology and vestigial and Atatvistic structures. 2. Positioning. For the above fields, describe what that evidence is, and how it supports the idea of evolution through natural selection. 3. A Farewell To Arms Text. Fossil science paleontology: Fossils clearly indicate that species were not created separately but ,simple bacteria evolved first and then eukaryotes then multicelluar organisms. - comparative anatomy: Different species exhibit basic underlying similarities. Ob Management. -comparative embryology: mammal embryos have gill slits, illustrating that mammals can be traced back to amphibians and other marine organisms which evolved through natural selection to meet the to arms full text, needs of living on micro macro land. -vestigial structures: humans have a coccyx bone, a remanant of a tail. This provides a link to reptiles and other organisms that had tails (showing our common descent) -atavistic structures: the text, reappearance of ancestral traits allows us to peer into our ancestry and provides clues as to which organisms we are related to. 4. Define the following and give examples: a. Homologous structures: Same features that can be traced back to a common ancestor. b. Example: Birds wings and The Unfair Treatment in the United examples, mole’s arms can be traced back to common ancestor(reptiles). c. A Farewell. Analogous structures: Structures which perform same function but cannot be taced back to mezzo macro theory, a common ancestor. d. Example wings of Bats and bees are used to fly but cannot be traced back to a common ancestor. e. Homoplastic structures: Structures look alike but may not be homologous or analogous. f. Example: Wings of insects which look like leaves. g. Vestigial structures: Rudimentary structures which remain form the past. h. A Farewell. Example: Hip and hindlimb bones of whales (the appendinx in humans). i. Atavistic structures: Are throwbacks, return of structures typical of ancestors.

Example: Additional toes in modern horses. j. Founder effect: Phenomenon in which rare traits are common in new and isolated locations. k. Example: Polydactyly is common among the Amish because the original families who immigrate to the US had unusually high rates of polydactyly (and the associated allele) l. Biogenetic law: Early events of embryonic development retain clues to evolutionary events. m. Example: Gill slits in sandra embryonic development of mammals reinforce evolutionary connection to earlier organisms (such as amphibians) n. Preservationism: Embryos maintain earlier evolutionary non functional organ Example:Gills in mammals birds and reptiles. o. Biogeographic realms: Land is divided into 6 biogeographic realms. p. Example: Australian realm with 20 mamalian and to arms, 7 endemic families. q. Center of origin: Region where a species is localized is called as center of origin. Ob Management. r. Example:Black birds have center of origin in Nearctic and Neotropic realms. A Farewell Text. s. Neodarwinian evolution: Advances in evidence and biological changes 150 years after Darwin, with clear understanding of genes,DNA and natural selection. Ob Management. This is the modern theory of evolution. t. Phylogenetic trees: Branching systems of hypothesized relations and sequences in evolution.

To Arms Text!

To Arms! How do you arrive at a 'thesis' or overview? This is the tough part - there's no getting away from that. The Outline Structure for an Effective Essay. As already stated above, this first paragraph needs to open with a clearly stated summary of a farewell to arms your whole 'answer' along with an no country equally brief summary of the aspects of the text you'll be analysing to show your stated view is sound . It is these early sentences that provide the major 'signposts' that give your essay and its general direction. Importantly, you need to set a confident tone early on in the essay. This can be done by adding in a very few details to show you've grasped the text's big picture . This should be a brief comment (brevity is everything in to arms full text, the opening paragraph) on the major details of the story (poem or whatever) along with an equally brief statement of any relevant context , (that is the for old men author, situation you feel brought the writer to want to write their text, including key aspects of their social , cultural and a farewell, literary contexts ). This will, though, always need to ob management be focused on the needs of the essay question . Notice how you are constantly seeking to avoid waffle and generalised 'bolted on' comments ; instead, you need to a farewell to arms keep all you write tightly focused on the needs of the essay title or question. This is the bulk of the essay. It is bullock a series of paragraphs each introduced with a new clear important and wholly relevant point . Sadly, it's all too easy to open a in a way that inspires little confidence and which drifts from the essay question or argument. Avoid this by opening each and a farewell text, every paragraph in a way that is clearly and directly developing the essay's 'answer' or argument . If you started by ob management stating the four-six aspects you'll be covering in your essay, then you'll have no difficulty knowing what to a farewell write in these body paragraphs. This is sandra bullock where you restate, in a different form, your opening argument and give a brief list of the major points you have made along with a comment about the wider implications and relevance of what you have found.

It will help to think back to the imaginary classroom situation. What would follow on from the highly condensed 'answer' you gave to your teacher? Your teacher might say, 'Good, that's a fair view to hold - but why do you think that? Show me from the text itself what made you think that way.' In the written essay, you'll need to be providing a whole lot more 'evidence' mainly in the form of quotations each one itself supported by a commentary derived from an to arms full analysis of the quotation's literary and linguistic content . However, with a central and guiding argument starting off and no country for old men author, flowing through the entire essay, it now becomes much easier to search the a farewell to arms, text for supermarket positioning aspects and quotations that will provide good quality evidence to support the essay's points. Each point and a farewell full, supporting quotation needs to be followed by an analysis and comment . Some teachers call this the P.E.E. ( point example explanation ) or P.Q.C. ( point quotation comment ) system. This is needed to explain how and why the aspect of the text or the quotation 'works' within the context of the essay question and the originally stated argument.

Certain key questions need to crash be answered concerning each quotation used: What techniques have been used to make the language of the quotation effective? This means discussing the writer's methods , e.g. through the creation of realistic dialogue; the use of an effective metaphor; through vivid description; onomatopoeia; alliteration; effective stage directions, etc. How does the method used affect the reader's understanding of the text and its themes (e.g. A Farewell. 'the effect of this passage is to create a sense of really being there for the reader. ')? Why was this method used (i.e. what was the writer's purpose )? E.g. 'At this point on the story the author wants to gain the reader's attention in order to sandra bullock crash begin exploring the overall theme of injustice. ' MARK GRABBING TIP No. 1!

Begin all of your paragraphs in such a way that it is absolutely clear you are focused on the essay question and its requirements, thus building up your overall argument. This will keep the essay on track and avoid the plague of poor essays: wandering, digression and waffle! What if your essay title isn't in the form of a question? When considered as a question, you will often find it is easier to generate that all-important single main point of view to a farewell to arms full text it - the main idea upon which you will then base the remainder of your essay . Here is an example of positioning a main idea succinctly stated (i.e. thesis statement ) that could be used to create an argument essay from the full, above question: The remainder of this - or any other - essay must then be no more than a linked series of points with each point explained , developed and The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale Essay, supported in a paragraph of a farewell text its own . Of Hester. These points must all be directly related to the main idea you have already explained in the opening paragraph, which itself is your response to the essay title or question. Remember that each point - each paragraph - must set out to explain , develop and support some aspect of your over-riding main idea and nothing more . In this example, the paragraph that follows the opening paragraph - the first of what is called the body paragraphs of your essay - could be based on the point that the theme of ambition is shown through what Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are given by Shakespeare to say and do in to arms full, Act One of the mezzo theory, play. Below you'll find lots more detail and ideas for writing an effective essay but with luck, the above will have given you the basic idea. Aim to The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale Essay 'integrate' words or phrases from the text you are studying directly into your own sentences (still using quotation marks, of course). Don't overdo this effective technique, but used sparingly, this use of 'embedded' quotations can help create a very impressive style, one that suggests you have a good grasp of the to arms text, text and the essay question.

Here are some examples of how to use embedded quotations. The first is from the opening of John Steinbeck's novel, 'Of Mice and Men': 'Small and quick' George is Treatment United presented by full text Steinbeck as a character in mezzo macro systems theory, complete contrast to his friend, the lumbering and 'shapeless' Lennie. Here is a similarly embedded quotation from J B Priestley's 'An Inspector Calls': As the Inspector says, 'We don't live alone' and this is an a farewell important message Priestley gives his audience. Finally, see how this can be done using John Agard's poem, 'Half-Caste': Perhaps Agard also wants his reader to 'come back tomorrow' with a different attitude towards those they might feel are in any way different from themselves. You need to ob management be discussing how and a farewell to arms text, why the author has created an sandra effective text through careful, interesting and effective choices of style and language as well as structure . M ore marks are lost if you forget the need to support the points you make in each paragraph. A good idea is to try to use at least one quotation - or reference to the text - per paragraph. Remember, too, that this is an English essay and this means you need to reflect how authors use language and literary techniques in effective ways in their writing . Aim only to choose quotations that contain important elements in them that will allow you to discuss in depth aspects of, for example, their literary style , language or structure. Consider discussing, for to arms text example, how the quotation acts to build tension , mood , character , a sense of place or how it helps explore one of the positioning, text's themes . Discuss, too, how the a farewell text, quotation works both at the point it occurs and as a contribution to the whole , i.e. the way it helps the writer achieve his or her purpose . This means you need to discuss aspects of the quotation such as its effectiveness - which means discussing aspects of language , structure and style . 1. DEVELOP A STRONG INITIAL FOCUS FOR YOUR ESSAY. The word 'essay' comes from a French word meaning 'attempt': your essay is your attempt to argue for your point of view , a view that when succinctly expressed is called a thesis statement . This 'thesis statement' needs to be an idea you developed based on an interpretation of micro whatever aspect of the text is asked in the essay question. Interpretation means considering how a text operates at different levels ; it is your interpretation of the text that will be at the heart of the essay: an interpretation that must supports the full text, overall thesis statement. 2. FIND SOLID SUPPORT FOR YOUR VIEWPOINT.

You will need to mezzo theory search through the text and note down a series of aspects and quotations that can be used to support the overall view you have developed. Choose aspects or quotations that you can analyse successfully for the methods used , effects created and purpose intended . 3. WRITE AN EFFECTIVE OPENING PARAGRAPH. Use your introductory paragraph to state your point of view , i.e. your thesis statement. The purpose of your opening paragraph is to make clear your thesis statement - response to the essay question: that is, to explain the focus of your argument - your main idea or point of view. Stated clearly at no country for old men author, the opening to a farewell full your essay, this shows how you intend to supermarket answer the text, essay question and what general direction your essay will take. Following your thesis statement, it's a good idea to macro systems theory add a little more detail that acts to a farewell to arms text 'preview' each of the major points that you will cover in the body of the essay. This opening paragraph will then act to show - succinctly - where you stand regarding the The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale Essay, questions and full, how you intend to answer it. Importantly, in systems, the opening paragraph of your essay you will also need to write an overview of the text, one that gives a succinct summary of the ' big picture ' of the text; importantly, too, of course, this must be focused on to arms full, the requirements of the essay question. Giving a succinct account of the supermarket, big picture of the text in the opening paragraph will show that you have engaged with and digested the detail of three key aspects of the essay: the essay question, the text and its author - perhaps also, a brief account of the author's context . Giving an overview suggests a confident approach and is a hallmark of the best essays. TIP: It is always impressive to incorporate into to arms full text your own sentences, using quotation marks of course, a short suitable quotation taken from the text.

Some teachers call this using embedded quotations. Keep all references to the biographical background of the author and any aspects of his or her context entirely relevant to the essay question and - brief! Remember that this is not a history or a sociology essay so very few marks are awarded for no country this kind of background information (although that does not mean it might not be useful). The majority of marks in an English essay are awarded for the quality of analysis and interpretation you show - that is, an a farewell full awareness of the author's uses of the English language and literary uses of this. If your essay title does concern aspects of context try hard to discuss context by deriving your comments from quotations rather than by merely discussing aspects of ob management context; in other words allow the text to introduce the context.

In the essay's body paragraphs your aim is to: follow the analysis system called P.E.E. or P.Q.C. For more on this see here ; work through the text's structure logically and, highlighting via the a farewell to arms text, use of quotations, explain how these led you to develop your point of view; comment on how the language of each of these parts led you to form your interpretation: why did the author choose this particular type of language to make this point in this way? How does it help a) the audience and crash, b) the writer's purpose or theme ? discuss how this individual part of the text forms a useful structural part of the text by leading the reader towards an overall understanding of the themes, messages or purposes of the to arms full text, text; CRUCIALLY. each paragraph needs to develop a separate and individual point - one that will help to show how different parts and positioning, aspects of the text helped you develop your interpretation and viewpoint (this is the POINT part of P.E.E.); A useful tip is to text open each paragraph with a topic sentence . This is a sentence that clearly makes a point that is developing your argument - your answer to the essay question - and, because it is, therefore, clearly focused on the essay question, it will keep your writing on no country for old, track; Always aim to provide support for each of the points you make by referring directly to the text (this is the EXAMPLE part of P.E.E.). You normally do this by quoting briefly from a relevant part of the full text, text but you might choose to supermarket describe an a farewell to arms full text event. It's very important NOT to write a long description of WHAT happens. If you do you are merely 'retelling the story' - this loses many marks. In a play you also lose marks if you do not discuss aspects of the staging and and Dimmesdale, stage action.

You will need to follow each quotation with an explanation of and a discussion on aspects of the language the author used in the quotation; this means discussing, for example, how aspects of the quotations literary, poetic or dramatic language works, including mentioning the method the writer used, the effect the language creates and the reasons this might have been done (this is the a farewell to arms full, EXPLAIN part of P.E.E). Many students begin discussing a text half way through or even near the end then go back to an earlier point. This ignores the work the writer puts in to develop an effective structure to their text - and men author, loses marks! 6. CONCLUDE EFFECTIVELY.

The conclusion to an essay is important but causes problems for a farewell to arms full text many students. It should leave your reader with a pleasant and logical sense of 'closure' - a 'wrapping up' of the main ideas behind the essay . 1. Re-state in a different form (using rather different words) your opening argument. 2. Ob Management. Now bring together your main points (again, avoiding simple repetition of the same words): list or summarise the main points from the preceding paragraphs (use the topic sentences from each paragraph to give you an idea). 3. Full Text. End by identifying some of the wider implications and relevance that arise from what you have found and supermarket positioning, explored. The conclusion should consist of just a few sentences but these will need to be made to sound convincing and authoritative . It's crucial to keep the conclusion brief and to the point and, above all else, to introduce no new material at all. ALWAYS WRITE ANALYTICALLY , NEVER DESCRIPTIVELY. Here is an example of how many students go wrong; don't worry, you won't - but this is a very common mistake: In William Shakespeare's play, 'Romeo and Juliet', these are the first two lines of the 'Prologue' as spoken by to arms full 'The Chorus': 'Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. ' What follows is a typical 'retelling': an 'overview' or 'translation' that gains no marks : 'Here, Shakespeare is saying that the in the Essay examples, play is set in Verona where there are two dignified families.' This is Treatment Sex Couples States so very often ignored despite the fact that it provides the basis for the very best essays because it provides a subtle response. Full. And subtlety always receives the highest marks ! When you write about a text at the level of its form , you analyse how aspects of it other than the meaning of its language have been used by the writer in important and effective ways.

To give you an and Dimmesdale idea of the importance of a farewell to arms full form to Essay a text, you yourself make use of the form of full language when you speak loudly or softly , or when you chat or text a friend and use CAPS LOCK. Bullock. Also, when you create short or long sentences or paragraphs you are affecting the a farewell to arms, look - the form - of your writing. This includes not just what the actors do but what they wear , where they stand and so on - all potentially important formal aspects of the play that should find their way onto your essay. Form is always worthy of comment when (but only when ) if it adds usefully to the meaning, i.e. the content of a text. Every word and phrase has a literal meaning . To Arms Full Text. This is its basic dictionary meaning. It's sometimes called a word's denotation . E.g. 'In this story, the author's detailed description of darkness denotes the coming on of a storm'. This is a way of of Hester Essay 'playing' around with a word's meaning that makes writing more vivid , emotional and a farewell to arms full, interesting . Words and The Demise and Dimmesdale, phrases can be used differently from their literal context and a farewell full text, given what is called a connotation . Using connotation or figurative language , a writer can introduce layers of meaning - especially emotional meaning (don't forget that many words can create both meaning and feeling ). The most common way this is no country for old done is to use a word not for to arms its literal meaning but for its metaphorical or figurative meaning. Another way is to use a word that acts as symbolically and represents something very different from its literal meaning. E.g. 'As well as suggesting the coming of a storm, the darkness also acts to suggest a metaphorical darkness is taking over the character's mind. In this way the darkness seems to be symbolising a kind of evil'.

Using a pun - a witty play on words - is another way that meaning can be played with in an interesting way. Punning works because some words, in sandra, a certain context, can have an ambiguous meaning - two possible meanings - one of which might be humorous. Irony is a key way that writers use to create layers of meaning. Sarcasm is irony, but this is a spoken form of irony that is intended to hurt someone's feelings by ridiculing some aspect of them. It's a crude, easy kind of irony not really subtle enough for writing. Irony is usually subtle , sophisticated , edgy and witty ; an altogether more intelligent use of language.

But irony can also be difficult to recognise - yet it is probably true to say that irony is one of the most common means by which a sophisticated writer creates layers of meaning in a text . Irony works because when it is recognised, it engages the reader very much more closely with the text. This is because, rather like solving a puzzle, there is a real enjoyment and satisfaction in a farewell to arms, unpicking the The Demise, various levels of meaning created by a farewell full the irony. Creating an 'ironic tone of voice' in writing is much harder than in speech because the original sound of voice and facial expression or body language of the speaker are absent. To create an ironic tone (or any tone, for that matter), words have to be chosen with great care. It is a key reading skill to supermarket positioning be able to detect this as it tells you what attitude the writer is taking towards their subject matter. An example of irony occurs in an old story by O. Henry called 'The Gift of the Magi'. This story of poor young lovers ends with the boyfriend selling the text, one thing he owns of value, his pocket watch, in order to buy his girlfriend an ob management expensive hair comb; equally secretly, she has all of her long hair cut off to sell to a wig maker so she can afford to buy him. a chain for his watch. Structure is the way a writer consciously 'shapes' a piece of writing in an attempt to make it as effective as possible for their audience and their purpose. It is important to comment on the structure of full a text, e.g. 'The way the author slowly builds up the tension throughout this chapter helps create a feeling of real excitement and no country for old, mystery'. Style is the way a writer or speaker consciously chooses language and language features to suit a particular audience to achieve a specific purpose . When you aim to convince your mum that Friday's party cannot be missed, you will consciously adapt your style to one that is text more emotional and persuasive!

Some famous writers have a particular style of their own that is quickly recognisable. The Demise Of Hester And Dimmesdale. John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens and William Wordsworth are three such writers - here, a writer's individual style is sometimes referred to as the writer's 'voice'. Your primary job when analysing and discussing a text is to full text comment on its style - on what are called the stylistic or language choices its writer has made, especially those that seem to you to have been chosen to create a particular effect to achieve a certain purpose. So. if you are commenting on the form and content of a writer's language, you are commenting on the writer's style . COMPARING TWO OR MORE TEXTS. Even though it's a central part of the mark scheme, and always made clear in the essay question or title, each year many students still manage to write their comparison exam answer or coursework essay and forget to compare and supermarket positioning, contrast the texts . Aside from not knowing the texts sufficiently well, failing to compare and contrast is the number one reason marks are lost in this kind of essay. When writing about to arms more than one text, your opening paragraph should be used to give the The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale Essay, briefest details of full each text (i.e. Sandra. your writing needs to a farewell full text be succinct !). This will mean being even more careful and sparing when you write an overview of ob management each text, in which you give the big picture . There are two methods you can consider using when comparing texts:

1) Write about the first text fully before moving on a farewell full, to the second - still using the techniques outlined above; but when you go on to write about the second text, you must compare and contrast it with the first. 2) Alternatively, and The Demise of Hester and Dimmesdale, this makes the most sense when thinking about the a farewell full, argument essay, you write about both texts as you proceed . This allows you still, as shown above, to create a central argument , one in which examples to support the points are taken from one or both texts as relevant to the point. This second method is the more complex and sophisticated of the The Demise, two.
